Surgères

Established in the 9th Century during the Norman Invasions grew to become a town during the Middle Ages and around 1097; one of the most beautiful Roman Style Churches was built.
Birthplace of Hélène, the woman immortalised in verse by the poet Ronsard. The National school for the dairy (butter of Surgères) and associated food product industry (ENILIA) is based in Surgeres and attracts students from around the world.

Poitevin Marsh or “Venise verte”

Rochefort

Naval base and arsenal created by Colbert under Louis XIV, is a surprising town with its imposing Royal Ropewalk or Corderie Royale an imposing building 373 metres long built on the banks of the River Charente. This was built to supply the French Navy with sails and ropes and houses a permanent exhibition of “ropes and rigging”.
